I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies, Book 1)

I Am Number Four - Pittacus Lore This book had so much potential. I was grabbed by the front cover of this book - "Three are dead. I Am Number Four." What a great line! The main character of this book, Number Four, or his current alias of John Smith, has fled with a small group of aliens from the planet Lorien. Their planet has been destroyed by another group of aliens, the Mogadorians. The Mogadorians have followed this small group to Earth and are trying to destroy each remaining Lorien. The Loriens have a bizarre protection rule that only allows them to be killed in a certain numerical sequence. Numbers One, Two and Three have been killed and now the Mogadorians are searching for Number Four. Four is accompanied by Henri, his Lorien companion who has cared for him and is now training him to defeat the Mogadorians. Definitely, based on plot alone, this book would be 4+ stars. But the hero is another matter. I want a hero who is smart, tough, caring, and makes sacrifices, not a typical teenaged adolescent boy. After Number Four and Henri move to yet another small town to try and hide from the Mogadorians, Four falls in love with a high school girl, Sarah. There was way too much of 'wait, before I flee for my life/kill this alien/save the world, let's kiss one more time.' If you want a fun plot combined with teen romance, then read this book. If you want a fun exciting book, then still, give this book a shot - just skim over the high school romance parts.
