My expectations for this book was based primarily on all of those James Bond films - something with action, fast cars, a few gadgets and maybe a 'love them and leave them' love interest. This book had that and more. The plot was not that unusual for a spy novel, but what surprised me was James Bond. As in the movies, he is suave, smart, and very capable, but the book also has all of that inner dialog that is missing from the movies. It was interesting and eye-opening to see that even James Bond has self doubts and when he is playing at the Baccarat table, he might be cool and collected on the outside, but is sweating and tense waiting for that card to flip over. In this book, he is much more fallible and vulnerable, and much more likeable. Surprisingly good read. And Simon Vance makes and excellent Bond!
